Polypropylene (PP) is a widely used thermoplastic polymer known for its versatility and cost-effectiveness. Its chemical name is polypropylene, and it is commonly referred to as PP in the industry. With a specific gravity ranging from 0.9 to 0.91 g/cm³, it is one of the lightest plastics available. The molding shrinkage rate is between 1.0% and 2.5%, and the recommended molding temperature falls within 160°C to 220°C.
PP offers several advantages, including low density, good strength, stiffness, and hardness compared to low-density polyethylene. It can withstand temperatures up to around 100°C, making it suitable for a variety of applications. Additionally, it has excellent electrical insulation properties, especially at high frequencies, and is not significantly affected by humidity. However, it tends to become brittle at low temperatures and lacks wear resistance. It is also prone to aging over time if exposed to UV light or heat.
PP is ideal for manufacturing general mechanical components, corrosion-resistant parts, and insulating materials.
**Molding Characteristics:**
1. PP is a semi-crystalline material with low moisture absorption, which makes it easy to process. However, it is sensitive to thermal degradation, especially when in prolonged contact with hot metal surfaces.
2. It has good flow properties, but the shrinkage range is relatively large, increasing the risk of warping, sink marks, and deformation.
3. The cooling rate is fast, so the mold design should allow for gradual heat dissipation. Controlling the molding temperature is crucial. At lower temperatures and higher pressures, the material may develop orientation, leading to internal stresses. If the mold temperature is below 50°C, the surface finish may be poor, resulting in welding lines and flow marks. When the mold temperature exceeds 90°C, warpage becomes more likely.
4. To ensure optimal results, the wall thickness of the plastic part should be uniform. Avoid sharp corners or thick sections that could cause stress concentration and lead to defects like short shots or cracks.
By understanding these characteristics, manufacturers can optimize the molding process and produce high-quality PP components efficiently.
