In recent years, hard gold technology has gained significant traction in the jewelry industry, yet no formal product standards have been established. Industry professionals remain unclear about what level of hardness qualifies as "hard gold." However, Shenzhen United Blue Ocean Jewelry Co., Ltd. has taken a step forward by introducing second-generation hard gold technology, which ensures consistent hardness in hard gold jewelry. Recently, the company has developed an internal corporate standard for hard gold jewelry.
Experts from various authoritative institutions were invited to review the standard. These included Lan Yan and Chen Chun, National Engineers at China's Jewelry and Jade Products Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing, as well as Zhang Zhi from the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Jewelry, and Zhang Zhi from Shenzhen. Senior Engineer Chen Zhiqiang from the Institute of Inspection and Testing and Sun Yuanmo, General Manager of Shenzhen Zhongjin Gold Creation Co., Ltd., also participated in the evaluation.
The company’s hard gold technical standards cover production procedures, purity, hardness, marking, labeling, content determination methods, and inspection requirements. Notably, the production process emphasizes the complete elimination of cyanide usage. The finished gold jewelry must meet specified purity levels: hard gold must be no less than 99.9%, while hard 18K gold should not fall below 75%. Hardness specifications are clearly defined—hard gold jewelry must have a Vickers hardness of at least 140HV; (yellow) hard 18K gold must reach 200HV, and (red) hard 18K gold must be no less than 250HV. All aspects, including gold content testing, harmful element detection, hardness measurement, and appearance quality, are evaluated through regular procedures.
The standard aligns with QB/T 2062-2006 “Precious Metal Ornaments,†as well as GB/T 1.1-2000 and GB/T 1.2-2000, which provide guidelines on standardization and the method for determining normative elements in standards.
After nearly half a day of detailed discussions, the expert group conducted a thorough review of the draft standard, suggesting important amendments such as adding classifications and terminology for hard gold jewelry, expanding product types, and adjusting some K gold hardness ranges. Following the full review, no major disagreements were found. The expert group plans to submit the standard to the relevant authorities for official approval within one month.
Li Zhigang, General Manager of United Blue Ocean Jewelry, stated that due to the lack of industry-wide standards for hard gold jewelry, the company took the initiative to establish its own corporate standard, hoping to eventually drive the development of industry-wide standards. Zhang Zhi, a quality inspector at the National Jewellery Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, praised the company’s hard gold material as “perfect†based on inspection data. He emphasized the need for industry standards to prevent market disorder. However, establishing an industry standard is not something a single company or organization can decide—it requires consensus across the industry. Therefore, the formulation of hard gold jewelry industry standards will likely be a long and collaborative process.
