In recent months, Ryan's Christmas gift manufacturing companies have been experiencing a surge in activity, with their factories operating around the clock. The improvement in foreign trade conditions has positioned Wenzhou as a key player in the global Christmas gift market. According to data from the Shui On Gift Industry Association, this year’s export orders for Ruian Christmas products reached 550 million yuan, marking a 14.5% increase compared to the previous year.
Despite the high demand, many local companies are struggling with a severe labor shortage, forcing them to turn down large orders. “We started production in May and added five or six new processing lines, but the delivery schedule is still very tight,†said Hu Jianbo, the production manager of Ruart Huaerte Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. The company has received over 20 million yuan in orders this year, a 30% rise from last year. This growth comes from enhanced product features, including colorful curtain buckles that have attracted several million yuan in orders.
Another company, Ruifeng Bofeng Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., reported that the order volume for the past two or three months alone equals the total of the previous year, with overall output nearly doubling. He Yiqiu, the head of the company, noted that they gained numerous new customers through the Canton Fair and secured several major orders. Additionally, a foreign trade company has distributed over $1 million in orders across several small firms in Linxi Township, including his own.
Zhejiang Ruyi Gifts & Crafts Co., Ltd. is one of the few companies in Cangnan specializing in foreign trade Christmas products. The company has already shipped $17 million worth of Christmas items to Europe, America, and South America. “This year, we expect to complete $20 million in Christmas orders, which is nearly a 20% increase from last year,†said Chairman Zhong Zhongke. He attributed the surge in orders to the recovery of consumer markets in Western countries, and the company now employs nearly 2,000 workers who are working overtime to meet the demand.
Lin Xueyuan, president of the Shui On Gift Industry Association, pointed out that major clients have placed significantly more orders this year, contributing to the rebound in external demand. Lin also serves as chairman of Zhejiang Aoguang Company, whose orders have grown by nearly 30% this year. The company has introduced over 300 new designs featuring unique shapes and vibrant colors, while investing in equipment upgrades and process improvements.
According to Wang Shiming, director of the Linxi Township Economic and Trade Service Center, certain electroplated Christmas products have become highly popular this season. For example, silver-plated metal photo frames offer much higher value than standard gifts, allowing companies to charge premium prices. Many businesses are putting in extra effort to capitalize on this trend.
Wang Jianming, general manager of Ruian City Shuangming Christmas Gifts Co., Ltd., faced challenges this year due to a lack of workers. Despite a 30% increase in orders, the company could not fulfill all requests because it only had 150 workers instead of the required 250. “Last year, we lost over 50 workers, and this year, it's almost impossible to recruit new ones,†he said. Rising raw material costs have also reduced profits by nearly 20%. To address labor shortages, Ruian Bofeng Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. has partnered with over 30 family workshops in the village.
“Machine line production is essential for the industry's transformation and upgrading,†said Wang Shiming. In response to rising labor costs and shortages, Linxi Township has invested over 8 million yuan in equipment upgrades this year. For instance, the production of Christmas balls used to be time-consuming and inefficient, but after replacing manual methods with steam stoves, efficiency doubled. As a result, the output of two companies now matches that of the entire previous year.
