The improved foreign trade environment has positioned Wenzhou as a key player in the global Christmas gift market. According to data from the Shui On Gift Industry Association, this year's export orders for Ruian Christmas products reached 550 million yuan, marking a 14.5% increase compared to the previous year.
Despite the high order volume, many companies are struggling with labor shortages, leading some to turn down large contracts. Hu Jianbo, production manager at Ruart Huaerte Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., shared that the company started production in May and added several processing points, yet still faced tight delivery schedules. This year, the company has over 20 million yuan in orders, a 30% rise from last year. Focusing on product innovation, they have seen success with colorful curtain buckles, which have generated millions in revenue.
He Yiqiu, head of Ruifeng Bofeng Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., noted that the order volume for the past two or three months is comparable to the entire previous year, with total output nearly doubling. He attributed this growth to new customers met at the Canton Fair, where the company secured several large orders. Additionally, a foreign trade company distributed over 1 million US dollars worth of orders across several local firms, including his own.
Zhejiang Ruyi Gifts & Crafts Co., Ltd., one of the few companies in Cangnan focused on foreign trade Christmas products, has already shipped $17 million worth of items to Europe, America, and South America. Chairman Zhong Zhongke estimates that the company will complete around $20 million in Christmas orders this year, a nearly 20% increase from last year. He credited the recovery of consumer markets in Western countries for the surge in large orders, and the company currently employs nearly 2,000 workers, many of whom are working overtime.
Lin Xueyuan, president of the Shui On Gift Industry Association, highlighted a significant rise in orders from major clients this year, which he believes is driving the rebound in external demand. Lin also serves as chairman of Zhejiang Aoguang Company, which has seen nearly a 30% increase in orders. The company has introduced more than 300 new designs featuring unique shapes and vibrant colors, while investing in equipment upgrades to improve efficiency.
Wang Shiming, director of the Linxi Township Economic and Trade Service Center, pointed out that electroplated Christmas products, such as silver-plated metal photo frames, are particularly popular this season. These items offer significantly higher added value compared to standard gifts, allowing companies to charge premium prices. Many firms are finding it challenging to keep up with the demand due to rising material costs.
Wang Jianming, general manager of Ruian City Shuangming Christmas Gifts Co., Ltd., expressed frustration over the labor shortage, which forced the company to decline some large orders. Despite a 30% increase in orders, the company only had 150 workers instead of the required 250. “Last year, we lost over 50 workers, and this year, we can hardly find any new ones,†he said. Rising raw material costs have also reduced profits by nearly 20%. To cope, Ruian Bofeng Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. has partnered with over 30 family-run workshops in the village.
“Machine line production is essential for the industry’s transformation and upgrading,†Wang Shiming explained. In response to rising labor costs and shortages, Linxi Township invested over 8 million yuan in equipment upgrades and process improvements this year. For example, the production of Christmas balls, once a time-consuming task, has become much more efficient with the introduction of steam stoves, increasing production speed by 200%. As a result, the output of two companies now matches that of the entire previous year.
